I'll blog about them more at a later date, but these "marble columns" are really sandstone columns from the U.S. Capitol Building. You can learn more about them here.
I think you must have been at the National Arboretum in D.C. That's where those columns are located. The arboretum is a lovely place, esp. in April when the azaleas are in full floral bloom. The only problem is that the surrounding area is kind of dicey. I don't think a little hippo like yourself should be going through bad D.C. 'hoods. You're better in a pleasant suburban setting.
