Bon Voyage, Panda Boy!

My pal Tai Shan, the National Zoo's "baby" panda, has his bags packed to leave on February 4 and is all ready to meet his new friends in China. Here he is-mid-snooze-practicing for the time difference.

I guess he didn't want to pay extra for his bags and have his bamboo snacks confiscated at security, because he's traveling on FedEx! First class on FedEx probably means he will have more leg room, and won't have to put up with anyone kicking the back of his seat or reclining their seat into his lap.

Hi Hippo,

A word of caution ... I started getting those weird anonymous comments -- like whatever that one says -- but it was the prelude to a nasty attack on my old computer. Somehow my blogger account resulted in a security lapse in my computer, made worse by the fact I was using my administrator account as my every day use account. In the end I got a new computer (I needed one anyway). I also changed my comment permissions.

I suppose you saw today's Wash Post Express cover with title "Bamboo Hoo" about the panda leaving?

Thanks, Mr. Regulus. I try to keep up with the deleting of inappropriate (especially for little Hippo eyes) comments. I'll talk to my "staff" about upping the security around here....

...as for "Bamboo Hoo," I love a good pun (and bad ones, too).

Glad to hear you're being careful, little Hippo!

In my case, I thought I was being so cautious but all of a sudden -- wham! -- I got hit with the nastiest virus on Dec. 24th (how ironic is that?). However, in retrospect, I actually had ample warning. I was getting multiple weird anonymous spam / "bot" generated comments on my Regulus blog for the previous few weeks (since the vulnerability came through my Blogger account).

Also, it's true my previous anti-viral protection was rather lousy, and Windows XP is probably among the most virus-prone operating systems.

Anyway, I'm not trying to be overly alarmist. I also realize my computer skills are rather limited, so I may not know what I'm talking about. (A good friend of mine who is a software developer helped set up my new computer and explained what probably happened on the old one. I think I'm doing justice to what he said.)

Whatever the case, I'm little paranoid about comments and Blogger these days.

I suppose that the internet is no different these days than walking on a city street -- there is a natural cautiousness to it all.

Anyway, Hippo, you are doing fine and I really enjoy reading your blog. I hope you enjoyed the snow today. We probably won't have this snowy a winter for another 5 to 10 years!
